You print a DHL label from the order screen, the parcel goes in the cage, and the customer gets an email with a tracking number. Then a PayPal buyer opens an “item not received” case, and PayPal has no tracking on file. Your support inbox has a “where is my order?” message from someone whose order page shows nothing. The tracking number exists. It just lives in one place and nowhere else.
That is the normal state of a German WooCommerce store running Germanized. Labels for DHL and Deutsche Post are created inside WooCommerce, which is exactly what you want, but the tracking data they produce is stored in the shipping plugin’s own format. Anything that reads tracking from WooCommerce’s order data sees an empty field.
The fix is a bridge that copies the tracking number from each new label into the order’s shipment tracking data. Advanced Shipment Tracking Pro (AST PRO) has an integration built for this. Below is how it works, how to set it up, how to check it, and where it stops.
Why Germanized tracking does not reach the rest of your store
First, a naming point that trips people up. Since Germanized 4.0, the shipping features (shipments, returns, labels) are no longer part of Germanized itself. They moved into a separate plugin from the same developer, Shiptastic for WooCommerce, with DHL and Deutsche Post labels provided by the Shiptastic Integration for DHL. If your store updated recently and label creation stopped, that is usually why. In this post, “Germanized” means that whole setup.
When a label is created, the tracking number is saved against the Shiptastic shipment, and the customer receives Shiptastic’s shipment notification. Advanced Shipment Tracking Pro keeps its own tracking record on each order, and that record is what drives its tracking widget in emails, PayPal and Stripe tracking sync, and delivery status updates through TrackShip. Germanized does not write to that record, so all of those features have nothing to work with.
According to the integration documentation, when a label is created Germanized adds an order note containing the carrier, tracking number and tracking link. The integration reads that note and saves the details into AST PRO’s shipment tracking data.
When you do not need this
If the Shiptastic shipment email is the only place a tracking number needs to appear, you do not need a second plugin. The integration earns its place when tracking has to go further: into PayPal or Stripe, into a fulfilment dashboard, or into delivery status updates.
| Need | Germanized with Shiptastic | With AST PRO added |
|---|---|---|
| DHL and Deutsche Post labels | Yes | Yes, still created by Shiptastic |
| Tracking number in a shipping email | Yes | Yes, with AST PRO’s tracking widget |
| Tracking sent to PayPal or Stripe | No | Yes, once enabled |
| Delivery status updates | No | With TrackShip |
How to sync Germanized tracking into WooCommerce orders
Do this on a staging copy first if you can, and have one test order in Processing status ready.
- Confirm labels work on their own. Create a DHL or Deutsche Post label for the test order in Shiptastic and check an order note appears with the carrier and tracking number. If there is no note, the integration has nothing to read, so fix this before going further.
- Enable the integration. Go to
WooCommerce > Shipment Tracking > Integrations, find the Germanized integration and switch it on. - Choose how order status changes. On the same screen, the AutoComplete shipped orders option changes the order status to Shipped automatically once tracking is saved. Leave it off if your team prefers to move orders from Processing to Shipped by hand, for example after a packing check.
- Map carrier names. The carrier name Germanized writes into the order note may not match the name in AST PRO’s carrier list. When they differ, the tracking number is saved but the tracking link does not appear in the email. Open the order note from step 1, copy the carrier name exactly, and add it as an alias using Map Shipping Carrier Names. If you ship with more than DHL and Deutsche Post, our guide to WooCommerce shipping carrier integrations covers enabling the rest.
- Decide which shipping email the customer receives. Shiptastic sends its own shipment notification, and AST PRO sends a Shipped email with the tracking widget. Check both in
WooCommerce > Settings > Emailsand keep one, or the customer gets two messages about the same parcel. - Create a new label. Generate a label for a second test order. The sync runs when the label is created, not when you enable the integration.
If you take PayPal payments, turn on tracking sync after this is working. Our post on syncing WooCommerce tracking to PayPal explains what PayPal does with the data and how to set it up.
How to confirm the tracking synced
Open the second test order and check four things, in this order:
- The order note. Germanized’s note with the carrier and tracking number is present.
- The shipment tracking panel. The tracking number and carrier appear in AST PRO’s tracking panel on the edit order screen. If the note is there but the panel is empty, the integration is not enabled or the label was created before you enabled it.
- The order status. With AutoComplete shipped orders on, the order shows Shipped.
- The customer’s view. Place the test order with your own email address. The shipping email and the My Account > View Order page should both show a working tracking link. A tracking number with no link means the carrier name is not mapped, so go back to step 4.
What the Germanized integration does not do
- It does not create labels. Shiptastic and its DHL integration do that, and you need them installed and connected to your DHL business account.
- It does not cover orders labelled before you switched it on. Add tracking to those by hand or with a CSV import.
- It does not add tracking where none exists. If a Deutsche Post product has no tracking number, there is nothing to sync.
- It does not extend the carriers Shiptastic supports. The Shiptastic DHL integration currently covers DHL Paket for shops in Germany, not DHL Express.
- It does not turn off Shiptastic’s email. Choosing one shipping email is your decision, covered in step 5.
If an order has several Shiptastic shipments, test how the tracking numbers appear before relying on it for partial deliveries.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still need Shiptastic after updating Germanized?
Yes, if you create shipments or labels. From Germanized 4.0, shipping features are no longer included in the Germanized package, so shipments, returns and DHL labels need Shiptastic for WooCommerce and the Shiptastic Integration for DHL. Your legal features, such as delivery times and checkout checkboxes, stay in Germanized. The tracking integration reads the labels those shipping plugins produce.
Does this work with Deutsche Post labels?
The integration works from the order note Germanized writes when a label is created, so it depends on that note containing a tracking number. Tracked Deutsche Post products produce one; products without tracking give it nothing to copy. Create one test label for each Deutsche Post product you sell and check the order before relying on it.
Will customers receive two shipping emails?
They can. Shiptastic sends a shipment notification when a shipment is marked as shipped, and AST PRO sends its own Shipped email with the tracking widget. Review both in WooCommerce > Settings > Emails and disable the one you do not want. Test with a real order afterwards, because email plugins and customisers can re-enable templates.
Can DHL tracking from Germanized be sent to PayPal?
Once the tracking is saved into AST PRO, it can be synced to PayPal and Stripe using AST PRO’s payment tracking sync, which you enable separately. The sync sends tracking details to the payment provider. What PayPal or Stripe then does with them, including in a dispute, is their decision, so check their current seller terms for your region.
Why does the email show a tracking number but no link?
Almost always a carrier name mismatch. The tracking number was saved, but the carrier name Germanized sent does not match any carrier AST PRO knows, so it cannot build the link. Copy the carrier name from the order note and add it as an alias under Map Shipping Carrier Names, then create a new label to test.
Is the Germanized integration in the free version?
The Germanized integration is documented as part of Advanced Shipment Tracking Pro, alongside its other shipping-plugin integrations. The free Advanced Shipment Tracking plugin lets you add tracking to orders manually, but does not read labels from Germanized. If you are on the free version, tracking from Shiptastic labels has to be entered by hand.
Conclusion
Germanized and Shiptastic already handle the hard part of shipping from a German store: legally compliant checkout and DHL or Deutsche Post labels created without leaving WooCommerce. What they do not do is share that tracking with the rest of your store. Enabling the integration, mapping carrier names and choosing one shipping email closes that gap in about fifteen minutes, and the four checks above tell you whether it worked.
