Every tracking number you add to an order comes with a small decision: which carrier is this? Multiply that by fifty orders a day, across three or four carriers, and the dropdown becomes the slowest part of fulfilment. Pick the wrong one and the customer gets a tracking link that goes nowhere.
It doesn’t have to work that way.
AST PRO — Advanced Shipment Tracking for WooCommerce reads the tracking number as you enter it and selects the matching carrier for you. It works in the order page, the orders list, the Fulfillment dashboard, CSV imports, and tracking sent through the API or integrations. The carrier field goes from a decision to a confirmation.
This guide covers how carrier auto-detection works in AST PRO, how to set up your carrier list so it detects the right one, and what to check when it doesn’t.
How auto-detect carrier works
AST PRO keeps a library of tracking-number patterns for hundreds of carriers. UPS numbers start with 1Z, Royal Mail numbers end in GB, USPS numbers run 20 to 22 digits and start with 9. When you leave the tracking number field, AST PRO strips spaces and punctuation, compares the number against that library, and preselects the first enabled carrier that matches.
The important word is enabled. AST PRO only considers carriers you have switched on in your store. That is the entire setup: get your carrier list right and detection takes care of itself.
Setting up auto-detect carrier in 6 steps
1. Enable the carriers you actually ship with
Go to WooCommerce → Shipment Tracking → Shipping Carriers and use the Enable Shipping Carriers option to switch on each carrier you use. If you ship with UPS, USPS and DHL Express, enable those three. Detection now has a short, accurate list to match against.
2. Disable the carriers you don’t use
This step matters more than it looks. Several carriers share number formats: a 12-digit number can match FedEx, FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight, and 10-digit numbers match more than one DHL service. If only one of those is enabled, AST PRO picks it every time. If all of them are enabled, it picks the first match, which may not be yours.
3. Add a tracking number and let it detect
Open an order, paste the tracking number into the Shipment Tracking box, and tab out of the field. AST PRO adds a Matching Provider group to the top of the carrier dropdown, selects the first match, and shows a preview tracking link so you can confirm it opens the right carrier page.
4. Use the same flow in the Fulfillment dashboard
Auto-detection runs in the Fulfill & Add Tracking panel too, so bulk fulfilment days get the same treatment. Enter the number, check the carrier that was selected, and save. If more than one carrier matched, the others sit in the same Matching Provider group and you can switch with one click.
5. Leave the carrier column blank in CSV and FTP imports
When you import tracking numbers via CSV or the scheduled FTP/SFTP import, AST PRO first tries to match the carrier name in your file, then falls back to number-pattern detection if the name is missing or unrecognised. If your shipping software exports a carrier name AST PRO doesn’t recognise, add it under Custom API Name in the carrier’s edit screen so the name match wins before detection has to guess.
6. Rely on it for API and integration traffic
Tracking added through the Shipment Tracking API, or pushed in by integrations like ShipStation or Sendcloud, goes through the same name-then-pattern resolution. Developers who need to override the result for a specific carrier or number format can hook the ast_auto_detection_provider filter.
What auto-detection does and doesn’t decide
| Situation | What AST PRO does |
|---|---|
| Number matches one enabled carrier | Selects it automatically |
| Number matches several enabled carriers | Selects the first, lists the rest |
| Number matches only disabled carriers | No selection, you choose manually |
| Carrier name supplied via CSV or API | Name match wins over pattern match |
| Custom carrier you added yourself | Not auto-detected, select manually |
| Number has spaces or dashes | Cleaned before matching |
When the wrong carrier is detected
Nine times out of ten this comes back to step 2. Go to Shipping Carriers, search for the carrier that was wrongly selected, and disable it if you never ship with it. If you do ship with both carriers and they share a format, keep the dropdown habit for those orders: detection narrows the list to the two matches, and you pick between them.
For imports and integrations, check the carrier name your shipping platform sends. Mapping it under Custom API Name resolves the carrier before pattern detection runs, which removes the ambiguity entirely.
Conclusion
Carrier auto-detection in AST PRO removes a small decision from every order you fulfil, and small decisions are where fulfilment errors come from. Enable the carriers you use, disable the rest, and the carrier field fills itself in, whether tracking arrives by hand, by CSV, or through an integration.
