How to use SMS notifications to reduce WooCommerce cart abandonment

A customer fills their cart, reaches your checkout, types in their phone number, then vanishes at the payment step. Your abandoned cart email goes to a Gmail promotions tab and sits unread for three days. By then they’ve bought the same thing somewhere else.

Text messages don’t have that problem. They get read in minutes, and the phone number is already sitting in your order data.

SMS for WooCommerce handles the sending side of that: it collects SMS consent at checkout, validates the number, connects to over 20 SMS gateways, and fires automated messages on order status changes. Paired with AutomateWoo or FluentCRM, it also becomes the delivery channel for true cart recovery workflows.

This guide covers how to capture phone consent legally, which abandonment types you can actually recover, and how to wire up the automation.

How to set up SMS recovery messages step by step

1. Turn on the checkout opt-in checkbox
Go to WooCommerce → SMS Settings → Settings and enable customer notifications. The plugin adds a consent checkbox to your checkout, and you control both the label text and where it appears (before or after the billing form, before the order notes, or right above the Place Order button). It works with the classic checkout and the WooCommerce checkout block.

2. Validate the phone number before you rely on it
Enable phone number validation on checkout in the provider settings. Invalid and unreachable numbers get caught at entry instead of burning SMS credits on messages that never land. This matters more than it sounds: a recovery campaign sending to malformed numbers looks like it failed when it never sent.

3. Connect your SMS gateway
Pick your provider and paste in the credentials. Twilio, Vonage, ClickSend, MSG91, Fast2SMS, BulkGate, Octopush and a dozen others are supported, along with WhatsApp Business if your customers live in a WhatsApp-first market. Use the built-in test message tool before you go live.

4. Recover failed and pending payments first
This is the highest-return setup and it needs no third-party automation. In the SMS Notifications tab, enable messages for the Pending Payment, Failed and On Hold statuses. Every one of those orders is a customer who reached your payment step and didn’t finish, and unlike a truly abandoned cart, you already have their phone number and consent.

5. Wire up cart recovery through AutomateWoo
AutomateWoo provides the abandoned cart trigger, SMS for WooCommerce provides the send. Create a workflow with the abandoned cart trigger, then add the Send SMS action from the SMS action group. Set the recipient to {{ customer.phone }} or {{ order.billing_phone }} and write your message body.

6. Or run it from a FluentCRM funnel
If FluentCRM is your automation layer, use the Send SMS via SMS for WooCommerce funnel action instead. Set the recipient to Contact so it pulls the subscriber’s phone, then write the body using FluentCRM smart codes like {{contact.first_name}} alongside the standard order variables.

7. Shorten the recovery link and stay under 160 characters
A cart URL will eat your whole message. Enable the URL shortener service in settings (Bitly or Google) so links get compressed automatically, and watch the live character counter as you write. Every 160 characters is a separate billable segment on most gateways.

8. Set quiet hours and check the log
Configure the time schedule so recovery messages never land at 2am, which is the fastest way to turn a nudge into an unsubscribe. The SMS Logs tab shows delivery status for every message sent, so you can confirm the workflow actually fired before you judge the results.

Start where the phone numbers already are

Most stores chase pre-checkout cart abandonment and ignore the pending and failed orders sitting in their admin right now, which are easier to recover and need no extra tooling. Set up status-based SMS first, measure it for a fortnight, then layer on an automation platform for the earlier funnel stage. SMS for WooCommerce covers the sending, opt-in and compliance side of both.
